NIST BTP-Metrics

Developing metrics for a benchmarking-framework to rank biometric template protection

Recently interest in biometric template protection (BTP) has increased significantly. Biometric template protection addresses limitations of conventional biometrics such as privacy issues, cross-matching across databases etc. However, the lack of well-established metrics for BTP does not enable direct comparison of different BTP algorithms and consequently independent benchmarking of BTP algorithms. The primary objective of this project is to develop metrics for ranking and comparing different biometric template protection algorithms. The project will, therefore, identify and select relevant criteria for BTP performance assessment and comparison. The establishment of such metrics (and criteria) will facilitate not only adequate performance assessment and comparison of BTP for algorithm developers but will also enable benchmarking activities of biometric template protection algorithms by independent organizations. In addition, the project will contribute to a community information platform which will be established under the leadership of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
